Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly inaugurated the 28th edition of the Cairo International Technology Exhibition and Conference (Cairo ICT 2024) this morning, held under the theme "The Next Wave". Representing President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the event is taking place at the Egypt International Exhibition Center from November 17 to 20, under the patronage of the President.

The opening was attended by Dr. Amr Talaat, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, along with other high-ranking officials, including Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population; Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research; Advisor Adnan Fanjari, Minister of Justice; Engineer Ghada Labib, Deputy Minister of Communications for Institutional Development; Dr. Mohamed Farid Saleh, Chairman of the Financial Regulatory Authority; Ibrahim El-Segini, Chairman of the Consumer Protection Agency; Osama Kamal, Chairman of Trade Fairs International, the event’s organizer; ambassadors; and other key stakeholders.

Highlights of the Event

During the opening, Prime Minister Madbouly toured the exhibition, starting with the pavilion of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. Dr. Amr Talaat presented the ministry’s Digital Egypt Strategy, aimed at empowering citizens through digital services, fostering innovation, and creating jobs in the digital economy.

Dr. Talaat emphasized the citizen-centric pillars of the strategy, which focus on simplifying access to government digital services, enabling digital job creation, promoting entrepreneurship, and enhancing digital infrastructure to ensure reliable internet access.

Key Projects and Developments

The minister also highlighted several of the ministry’s notable projects, including:

  • The Digital Egypt Platform, featuring a range of government services and registering over 8 million users to date.

  • Universal Health Insurance Digitization and Online Company Registration Platforms.

  • AI-driven applications in healthcare, such as early detection of glaucoma with 93% accuracy, diabetic retinopathy with 95% accuracy, and breast cancer diagnostics.

Dr. Talaat also noted Egypt’s position among the top three countries in the Middle East and North Africa for entrepreneurship, with over 600 tech-based startups. The ministry has established 23 Digital Egypt Creativity Centers across 19 governorates, with plans to expand to 32 centers in all 27 governorates. Additionally, the ministry has significantly increased its digital capacity-building budget by 25 times since 2018, targeting 500,000 trainees in the current fiscal year, with 50% being women.

Programs cater to all age groups, from school students through the "Digital Egypt’s Budding Talents" initiative to university students through Egypt University of Informatics. For graduates, initiatives like "Digital Egypt Builders" aim to develop youth skills, including in freelancing and digital entrepreneurship.

ICT Sector Growth and Achievements

Dr. Talaat outlined the ICT sector's impressive growth, which recorded an annual growth rate exceeding 16%, maintaining its position as Egypt’s fastest-growing sector for five consecutive years. Its contribution to GDP rose from 3.2% in 2014 to 5.8% in 2023.

Egypt leads Africa in fixed internet speed, averaging 76.4 Mbps, and has advanced 49 ranks in the Government AI Readiness Index, from 111 in 2019 to 62 in 2023.

National Initiatives

In line with the "Decent Life" Presidential Initiative, the ministry is working to provide high-speed internet access, enhance mobile network coverage, and digitize services for over 50 million citizens in 4,500 villages. Projects include laying fiber optic cables to 9.3 million buildings and modernizing 1,700 post offices nationwide.
